Norway is full of tunnels. Laerdal Tunnel with a length of 24.5 kilometers, is the longest road tunnel in the world. The tunnel connects Laerdal and Aurland cities in western Norway and is divided into four sections separated by three artificial caves to interrupt the monotony of underground movements.

Europe’s first underwater restaurant opened in southern Norway in Lindesnes, with more than 7,000 customers already having reservations to eat amongst fish, according to Reuters. The restaurant, named “Under”, was designed at a depth of 5 meters by the Snoehetta Architecture Company, which also created the Oslo Opera House and the September 11 Memorial Museum in New York. Entrance to the restaurant, which looks like a huge concrete tube partially sunk in the North Sea, makes you feel like entering a sauna with wooden planks covering the upper section. But as you descend stairs measuring eight meters in length, you reach the dining area, with a capacity of 40 people and a giant ocean window, 11 meters long and 4 meters high.
“Fascination is given by underwater passage through this building. The huge window exposes the underwater environment, it’s not like an aquarium, “Snoehetta founder Kjetil Traedal Thorsen told Reuters. He explained that this construction is designed to withstand the weather and against what he called the” wave of the century ” .
A full 18-course menu with local ingredients and seafood including beverages can cost up to  400£ per person. “We expect 12,000 customers annually,” said one of the owners.The restaurant opens on Wednesday for friends and family owners, and first customers will have access from April. There are only a few underwater restaurants around the world, most of them in tropical destinations such as the Indian Ocean Maldives.

The construction included a 12 meter wide panoramic window and is designed to become part of the marine environment. The restaurant will be completed in 2019, being located at the southernmost point of the Norwegian coast.

The design of the restaurant is the work of the well-known Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, known for its spectacular earlier projects, such as the Norwegian Opera House or the Alexandrina Library in Egypt. The restaurant, called “Under”, will be at a depth of five meters, with thick walls, capable of withstanding the warmest weather conditions. “One of the spectacular effects of this building is how it connects nature and surface, and how you can get in a very dramatic way through this cement tube to the nature and marine life of the sea and experience which normally can not be experienced, “Rune Grasdal, chief architect of this project, told CNN.

The restaurant will has three levels and a capacity of 100 seats. Under the entrance there is  a champagne bar that marks the transition between the coast and the ocean. At the top level will be the main restaurant hall, dominated by the 12 meter wide acrylic window. Grasdal, who likened the building to a periscope, said one of the most important things for him was for people to feel safe.

For this project, the architects team took into account several elements, such as natural materials used as oak wood, and the existing brightness. “Those who come here will have a thrilling experience, but equally important, they must feel safe,” Grasdal said.
Environmental considerations have also played a role in this project, the concrete body of the building being in turn covered with a material that will allow shells to be attached to fully integrate the structure into the marine ecosystem.
